- What is Special Olympics :Special Olympics is an international programme
of year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than
one million children and adults with mental retardation.

Olympics Started: In 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver organized
the first International Special Olympics Games at Soldier Field, Chicago,
Illinois, USA.
- Philosophy:
Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with mental retardation
can, with proper instructions and encouragement, lean, enjoy and benefit
from participation in individual and team sports.
- Special
Olympics Oath: Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be
brave in the attempt.
- Mission:
To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in variety
of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with mental retardation
by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness,
demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of
gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics
athletes and the community.
- Goal:
For all persons with mental retardation to have chance to become useful
and productive citizens who are accepted and respected in their communities.
- Benefits:
Improve physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence,
a more positive self-image friendships and increased family support.
Special
Olympics holds following four types of competitions:
- Local-Provincial
- State : Larger competition with athletes from another area.
