  1. What is Special Olympics :Special Olympics is an international programme of year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than one million children and adults with mental retardation.

  3. Special Olympics Started: In 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver organized the first International Special Olympics Games at Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

  4. Philosophy: Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with mental retardation can, with proper instructions and encouragement, lean, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports.

  5. Special Olympics Oath: Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

  6. Mission: To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with mental retardation by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

  7. Goal: For all persons with mental retardation to have chance to become useful and productive citizens who are accepted and respected in their communities.

  8. Benefits: Improve physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence, a more positive self-image friendships and increased family support.
  9. Special Olympics holds following four types of competitions:

    1. Local-Provincial - State : Larger competition with athletes from another area.
      Frequency - Every one or two years.
      Benefits - Increases competition and socialization

    2. National : Very large competition.
      Frequency - Once every four years
      Benefits - Very valuable learning experience or athletes, coaches, families, Officials, Volunteers, Sponsors and Media.
