Social Work
Social Work as a source of study as well as profession has not flourished in India so far. Its spread was a halfhearted effort with reluctant participants and disillusioned beneficiaries. A complex social system with some cultural factors was responsible for a slow progress of social work in India. But the scenario has changed with the introduction of new economic policies and structural adjustment. Social work is no longer on the sidelines; it has today become a part of the mainstream and influences every sphere of social and national life.
Liberalisation and globalization have introduced cutthroat competition, in this profit oriented market economy, the government’s expenditure in social sector has declined. On the other hand, consumers of social work service have now become quite demanding in order to meet the increasing demand, many multinational companies and big industrial houses in the country, apart from NGOs, have appeared in the market to promote corporate social responsibility by undertaking various social welfare programmes in the filed of education, health etc.
At present, many national and international agencies are sponsoring various social welfare programmes. With increasing momentum in development, social work as a profession has come to the forefront with great job prospects. In foreign countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, New Zeeland, Korea and Japan, social services have been widely appreciated. In India social work is gaining new ground as a profession.
Social welfare work implies helping people to tackle various types of problems that they face in their life. These could relate to community development, social justice, mental or physical disabilities, old age problems, conflict with law, problems in family and individual life, adolescent problems, frustration destitution, anti-social behaviour, disaster and many more. Living in a liberalized economy, life has become a strenuous struggle towards sustenance and problems are aplenty. This sort of situation calls for social and welfare work and its need is now of paramount importance. Social welfare workers also solve case and cause advocacy issues and lobby to change social welfare plans and policies of the government.
