Disabled Students receive Uniforms and Prizes

In a function organized by the Murthuzaviya Educational and Cultural Foundation of South India differently abled children of its educational institutions in the city, were distributed uniforms and prizes.

K.Mohamed, Meeran, Chairman and Managing Director, G.M Pens International Pvt. Ltd. urged the students to improve their skill in English, mathematics, and accountancy.

The foundation, started in 1952, runs the Murthuzayia Oriental Higher Secondary School and a school for the mentally challenged and the hearing impaired. S.K Khadri foundation president announced that the construction of a charitable hospital was on at Kondungaiyur.

NGO's working for Disabled come together

V-Excel Educational Trust in collaboration with Kotak Mahindra Bank organised a seminar for NGOs working with the disabled on the 31st of August. Vasudha Prakash, founder and director of the Trust, said, "There is no network for NGOs working with the disabled. The idea is to bring them together and we discussed on creating a network."

The topics discussed included advocacy, inclusion and vocational training. Bringing in a transfer certificate among special schools and supporting inclusion into mainstream education were also amongst the issues under discussion. As many as 75 people from 40 NGOs participated in the seminar.

V K Jeyakodi, State Commissioner for the Disabled, TamilNadu, emphasized on early intervention as regards disabled children, inclusion and vocational training. He said that the government would help in creating markets for selling the products made by disabled children. In addition, he said that the provision of free bus passes for disabled children would also been considered.

With the allowance for disabled children being increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per child, he said this could be used for improvement in their lives. The seminar also discussed the lack of teachers due to which students were being sent away.

Setting up Welfare Fund for Disabled

Karnataka Minister for Women and Child Welfare H.K. Kumaraswamy said on September 3, that the Government would set up a welfare fund for the physically challenged.

At a felicitation programme organized jointly by the Zilla Vachana Sahitya Parishad and the Ashmakiran School for the visually impaired, Mr. Kumaraswamy said the stipend being given to 3.8 lakh physically challenged persons in Karnataka had been increased to Rs.200 a month. He said there were 9.40 lakh physically challenged persons in the State and 1,750 self-help groups were formed.
