Government Scholarships for Students with Disabilities

About 50 students with various kinds of disability and from different parts of the country were handed over their scholarships by Union Minister for Social justice and empowerment Satyanarayan Jatiya on Thursday 13 February 2003.

Of the 180 persons with disabilities selected for the scholarship, 50 were present in the Capital to receive the honour in person.

The scholarship is meant for providing financial assistance to students with disabilities to enable them to pursue higher studies, including technical education.

The highest number of scholarships, 35, have been given to students from Tamil Nadu with Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka getting 20 and 18 scholarships, respectively.

The scholarship scheme is being implemented by the National Fund for People with Disability and applications have to be made to the fund's secretary.

Nearly 1,800 applications had been received this year for the scholarship whose amount varies depending on the course the person plans to take up as also the availability of hostel/residential facilities.
