National Seminar on Arts and Museums for Persons with Disability
Museums are public institutions, which communicate to public, material evidence
of mankind and their environment for the purpose of education and enjoyment.
Thus museums are meant for service to public. But, are museums fulfilling
their social role? On the one extreme we have museums clutching to their
'precious' collections for the benefit of the elite public. On the other
extreme, we have museums and similar centers with a lot of 'activities',
'noise' sand 'push-buttons', which may not be conducive to learning. Are
the models available in museums in the West useful to India and the South
Asian countries?
