New Cinema System For The Sensory Impaired

A new audio-visual system, which could revolutionize cinema going for millions of sensory impaired people was unveiled in UK recently. The new system has both subtitles and audio describes films. Subtitles are projected onto the screen using a small projector beside the screen, while audio descriptions are digitally broadcast to receivers worn around the neck.

At present, eleven UK cinemas have the equipment, made by US firm Digital Theatre Systems, installed as part of a trail by the Cinema Exhibitor's Association (CEA). But the system could be installed in 700 cinema sites across the country if a new £6 million proposal put to the UK Film Council is successful.

Although subtitling in UK cinemas has improved over the past nine months, the new system would represent a significant leap forward. Cinemas with the equipment would not have to order individual subtitled plates but inexpensive CD-ROMs with film specific 'access' information on.
