Book Review: TROY'S AMAZING UNIVERSE M for Mall
by Sharon Kennedy Tosten
Imagine that you're seven years old and the smallest kid in school. On top of that you can't speak very well and so people don't understand you. Your hearing isn't too good either and you learn who people are by smell. Even worse, you get your sounds mixed up and you can't read! Welcome to Troy's world.
Troy's every day world is an adventure. Trying to get people including mom (who smells of warm muffins) and dad (who smells of leather) to understand him is a difficult task. Troy has to use a mixture of hand signals and object showing to let people know exactly what he wants. Today Troy wants to go to the mall, he loves watching DVD's and he'd like a new one - thank you very much.
Troy's dad agrees to take Troy to the mall for his DVD, but as they stop at the gas station to fill up the minivan Felipe and Ed, who Troy names the Poopy Men because of their smell, steal the van with Troy inside. After they discover that they have this extra passenger with them, they panic and dump the van and Troy outside the mall, and it is here that Troy, a child who has always been over protected by his hypochondriac mom, begins his big adventure!
Troy may have difficulty talking, but he's far cleverer than you might think. He's also very funny as he thinks things through and makes decisions. When his parents post a reward for his return, Troy also has to deal with the Kidnappers, who suddenly want him back so that they can claim the reward.
This book is wonderful because it is based on a real boy! Sharon Kennedy Tosten, the author, based the book on her own son Troy. She wrote it because although Troy has learning problems, he manages to keep up with the world around him with his unusual talent and cheerfulness.
You'll love this book because Troy tells the story himself and because this book is just the start of something big! Troy's mom plans many more books but you might see this one become a movie! Work is underway to turn Troy's Amazing Universe into a movie and it has also been spotted by none other than the kid's channel Nickelodeon. One of the men who makes the animation for Little Bill, is working with Troy and his Mom to put together a cartoon series. Troy is going to hit the screens big, so get a head start and learn all about Troy's wonderful character now!
